This Friday on Food Revolution Day, communities across the world will come together and celebrate fresh food, the joy of cooking, healthy eating, and of course, enjoy amazing meals together. To honor this exceptional movement, the Italian Cultural Institute is hosting a food and wine tasting paired with the acclaimed Treasures of Teatro di San Carlo exhibit this Friday from 6:30 - 8:30. Join the fun and register here!

Created by Jamie Oliver’s Better Food Foundation, Food Revolution Day has shared common values with Carlo Petrini’s Slow Food Movement, which originated in Italy and espouses a philosophy of life that empowers people to improve their health, respect the environment and fairly compensate food producers. Slow Foodies, like Jamie Oliver, appreciate heirloom varieties of local produce and understand their importance to deliver healthy – and tasty – nutrition.

In a world of prevalent industrial farming, humanity’s relationship with food is becoming increasingly arms-length. We shouldn’t be surprised, then, that the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) found that 20% of students believe pasta comes from animals and 27% think yogurt comes from plants. (Source: page 12 of this ACER report.) Learn more telling statistics and go-to resources on Food Revolution Day’s Pinterest board.

I hope to see you Friday and will leave you with Mr. Oliver’s inspiring mission statement.

“My charity aims to inspire people to reconnect with food. It’s all about raising awareness and individual responsibility, resuscitating dying food culture around the world and, ultimately, keeping cooking skills alive.” Jamie Oliver
